PALA’s Annual Meeting & Career Development Day

The Polish American Librarians Association’s 5th Annual Meeting, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2015, offers a rare opportunity to network in a small-group setting with colleagues from around the country along with top professional leaders. This year’s meeting is set for Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, home of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, one of the nation’s outstanding providers of professional training and continuing education.

"Members of PALA from all over the country have indicated that they value the opportunity to meet other librarians with similar concerns about the delivery of library services and programs aimed not just at the Polish community but at our country’s increasingly diverse population," said PALA Executive Director Leonard Kniffel. “Libraries can be a struggling immigrant’s first encounter with free and open access to resources for a better life—or it can be a first encounter with uncaring bureaucracy. It’s up to us to make the difference,” he said. With that aim in mind, PALA is meeting this year at Dominican, a 4-year partner with PALA in the administration of the Vera May Zubrzycki Scholarship, which was awarded to one Dominican student each year from 2011 to 2014.

"This year’s event promises to be especially important for mid-career professionals and students because we will be offering topical sessions led by professionals in several areas key to creating top-notch services to diverse populations," said PALA President Ron Stoch. "If you are looking for ideas to promote diversity and multiculturalism in your library and your community, this meeting will fill the bill."

The meeting will also feature a keynote address by a nationally known writer or library leader. Past speakers have included Polish-American authors Brigid Pasulka and Stuart Dybek, and Keith Michael Fiels, Polish-American executive director of the American Library Association.

The Annual Meeting is free to PALA members and offers a complimentary buffet luncheon as well. (A $10 donation from nonmembers would be appreciated.) Annual Membership in the Polish American Librarians Association is $25. RSVP to More details will be posted on the PALA website at as they become available. If you have ideas for the program or would like to volunteer to work with the PALA board on planning, email Kniffel at
